You Don’t Need to Be a Coder to Raise an AI‑Literate Child

You Don’t Need to Be a Coder

I am not a coder. I can’t write Python. I don’t understand neural networks in any deep, mathematical way. But I’ve raised a child who can spot AI bias, debug a broken instruction sequence, and defend a product before an ethics board. And so can you.

The myth of the “expert parent”
We’ve been told that to teach our children about technology, we need to be technologists. That’s a myth — and a harmful one. The skills that matter most for AI literacy aren’t coding skills. They’re human skills: asking good questions, noticing patterns, challenging assumptions, talking about fairness.

What you actually need

  1. Curiosity. You don’t need answers. You need to be willing to wonder aloud. “How do you think that works?” “Why might that be unfair?”
  2. A handful of objects. Forks, spoons, socks, toys. The Secret Rule Game requires nothing else.
  3. A few good questions. “Who is left out?” “What would make this fairer?” “How would you test whether that’s true?”
  4. A willingness to play. The best AI lessons happen while you’re laughing at a robot putting cheese on its head.

The parent’s role in AI education
You are not the expert. You are the guide. You don’t need to know all the answers. You need to know how to ask the right questions and how to listen when your child discovers an answer you never saw coming.

At HiKIDAI, we built our entire platform around this idea. That’s why our games are designed for parents and children to play together. That’s why every printable activity includes a discussion guide. That’s why our philosophy — “You Are the Teacher” — applies to parents, too.

Start tonight
Go to the kitchen table. Grab a fork and a spoon and an apple and an orange. Play the Secret Rule Game. When your child guesses the rule, let them be the teacher. Watch what happens.

That’s it. That’s the first lesson. And you just taught it.
